JD Wetherspoon has submitted a planning application to Liverpool City Council for a new development on land adjacent to the Thomas Frost pub on Walton Road. The proposal seeks to convert a portion of Warden Street into a beer garden, with associated planters, festoon lighting, and an oak pergola.
Historic Building's New Chapter
The Thomas Frost pub occupies a historic building that originally served as T.W. Frost & Co. department store, opened in 1910 by local entrepreneur Thomas Frost. The family-run business operated for 97 years before closing in May 1978, as reported by the ECHO. In 1988, the building was purchased by RD Jenkins & Co Ltd, specialists in industrial sewing machines. Owner Robert Jenkins converted the three-storey building into individual retail outlets and small factory units, including The Sewing Centre and The Prescot Furnishing Company.
Beer Garden Plans
The proposed beer garden will occupy a portion of Warden Street, with access only from within the pub through a new internal lobby. The rest of the building's layout will remain unchanged, and the scale of the building will not be affected. Plans include planters with festoon posts and railings along the side elevation, an oak pergola utilizing planters, and wall-mounted light fittings with festoon lighting spanning from the posts.
