Spurs Hijack Man Utd Deal for £80m Fernandes with Huge Salary

Tottenham Hotspur have accelerated negotiations to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, offering a substantial salary package to hijack Manchester United's long-standing pursuit of the 21-year-old. The Hammers have valued Fernandes at £80 million, a figure that has made United hesitant despite agreeing personal terms with the player.

Manchester United's Midfield Rebuild at Risk

Manchester United, under manager Michael Carrick, have made Fernandes a top target for their midfield rebuild this summer. However, they have been reluctant to meet West Ham's £80 million valuation, instead valuing the Portugal international closer to £60 million. United had reportedly secured personal terms with Fernandes, who was keen to join compatriot Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford. But Tottenham's aggressive move has now cast doubt on that deal.

According to BBC Sport, Fernandes would also be open to a move to Spurs, and the north London club are optimistic about agreeing a transfer. The Sun reports that Tottenham are prepared to offer a wage package that will 'blow United out of the water,' giving them a clear advantage in the race.

Spurs' Aggressive Transfer Strategy

Tottenham have been particularly active in the transfer market following their narrow escape from relegation last season. They have already secured free transfers for Marco Senesi (Bournemouth) and Andy Robertson (Liverpool), and spent £52 million on Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke. Additionally, they made an £80 million offer for Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali, which was rejected. Fernandes is now viewed as a primary target to strengthen their midfield.

Other clubs, including Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid, have also explored a move for Fernandes, but Tottenham's financial offer appears to have put them in the driving seat.

United's Alternative Targets

Manchester United are already set to miss out on Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, who prefers a move to Manchester City. Losing Fernandes would be a significant blow to their midfield rebuild plans. The club are also interested in Bournemouth's Alex Scott, but Arsenal and Liverpool are keen, and Bournemouth have indicated Scott is not for sale. Other targets include Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, and a deal for Atalanta's Ederson is expected to be confirmed next month.
