Ryanair passengers told to pack cardboard box for hand luggage

Ryanair passengers are being advised to pack a cardboard insert in their hand luggage to avoid extra fees, following the airline's expansion of personal bag dimensions. The budget carrier increased the size allowance by 20% from September 2025, aligning with updated EU regulations. Basic ticket holders can now bring a bag measuring up to 40cm x 30cm x 20cm at no extra cost, provided it weighs under 10kg and fits under the seat in front.

Packing expert warns of overstuffed bags

Packing specialist Tom Schott from Schott Packaging cautioned that the larger allowance could lead to passengers overstuffing their bags, triggering penalty charges. He recommended using a lightweight cardboard insert to create a rigid frame, preventing bulging that attracts gate staff. "The new dimension is a game-changer, but only if you use it wisely," Schott said.

Tips to maximise space and avoid fees

Schott also suggested using sealable bags to maximise capacity, sorting belongings into smaller sections, and safeguarding valuables. He advised "thinking in modules"—bundling items into cubes with compact boxes or pouches to eliminate wasted space. Finally, he recommended pre-planning by laying out all items within a 40cm x 30cm outline on the floor to visualise what fits and assemble packed modules logically.
