Royal Mail Issues Apology for Widespread Delivery Disruptions

Royal Mail has confirmed significant delivery disruptions today, March 19, affecting 38 postcode areas across the United Kingdom. The postal operator has issued a formal apology to customers in the impacted regions, warning them to expect delays for both letters and parcels as it works to resolve the ongoing issues.

The company attributes the problems to high levels of sick absence, resourcing challenges, and other local factors. In a statement on their website, a Royal Mail spokesperson explained, "We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors."

Affected Locations and Service Impact

The disruptions span a diverse range of locations, including Aberlour, Colwyn Bay, Newcastle Under Lyme, Swindon, Grimsby, Whitechapel, and many others. Royal Mail has pledged to rotate deliveries in these areas to minimise delays for individual customers and provide targeted support to restore normal service standards.

This incident adds to a series of challenges for Royal Mail, which has faced ongoing criticism over delivery performance. Last October, the company was hit with a substantial £21 million fine for failing to meet its regulatory targets. Recent data from 2024-25 shows that only 77% of first-class mail and 92.5% of second-class mail arrived on time, falling well short of the mandated 93% and 98.5% benchmarks.

Stamp Price Increases Looming

The delivery delays come at a sensitive time, as Royal Mail prepares to implement stamp price increases next month. From April 6, First Class stamps will rise to £1.80, while Second Class stamps will cost 91p. According to Citizens Advice, this marks the eighth increase for First Class stamps since 2020, representing a staggering 137% rise from the 76p price in 2020.

Royal Mail's spokesperson added, "We're sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. We will regularly update customers on the offices most impacted." The company emphasises its commitment to addressing the underlying issues and returning to the high service standards customers expect.
