Bird droppings can damage car paint if left untreated, but a simple method using two household ingredients can remove them without harsh chemicals. According to Tim Shallcross, motoring expert for The Times, a microfibre cloth and warm water are effective and affordable alternatives to commercial cleaners.
How to Remove Dried Bird Droppings
Shallcross recommends soaking a microfibre cloth in warm water and laying it over the affected spot for a few minutes. For hardened droppings, this may take five to ten minutes. After soaking, rinse the cloth, soak it again, and gently dab the dropping away—do not rub. If residue remains, repeat the process.
He warns against using kitchen roll, as it is abrasive and can break apart, leaving fibres on the car. Microfibre cloths are ideal because they are soft and absorbent.
Why Prompt Cleaning is Essential
Bird excrement contains uric acid with a pH level of around four, which can corrode car paint. Andrew Jervis of ClickMechanic told the Daily Express in 2022 that failing to clean it off promptly can lead to costly paint repairs. He recommends a homemade mixture of baking soda and hot water, letting it soak for ten minutes, then wiping off.
Shallcross also notes that commercial cleaning products are available, but the simple water-and-cloth method works well for most cases.
