Octopus Energy has unveiled a new smart home battery system designed to help customers reduce electricity bills by storing cheap overnight power for daytime use. The announcement came during the company's Energy Tech Summit, where it introduced the Octopus Nook Colossus, a wall-mounted battery, and the Octopus Nook Cube, a portable version for renters.
How the Batteries Work
The Octopus Nook Colossus charges when electricity prices are low—typically overnight—then supplies power to appliances during peak hours. Octopus Energy confirmed that this system could save households hundreds of pounds annually. The battery comes in sizes up to 30kWh, enough to power an average home for about two days.
Portable Option for Renters
For the over 10 million renting households in Britain, Octopus also launched the Octopus Nook Cube, a smaller, portable battery that can be easily moved between homes. This makes the benefits of home battery storage accessible to renters for the first time.
CEO Statement
Greg Jackson, Founder and CEO of Octopus Energy Group, said: “Home batteries are a brilliant piece of tech and one of the smartest ways to cut energy bills right now. Offering Octopus batteries to our customers is a big step in our mission to help people to tap into the cheapest energy possible.”
Market Context
Octopus Energy becomes the first major UK supplier to offer its own home battery range directly to customers. Tesla has already sold over one million Powerwall units globally, but Octopus's move brings the technology to a broader UK audience amid rising energy costs driven by geopolitical tensions.
