Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is exploring Beijing's culinary scene, to the delight of social media. The tech mogul was spotted by the public and local media at No. 69 Fangzhuanchang Noodles, where he ordered a bowl of "zhajiangmian" — a Beijing specialty featuring noodles covered in a thick soybean-paste sauce mixed with vegetables and meat.
Enjoying a Local Favorite
"It's so good," he said, as he dug into the bowl while standing in front of the restaurant entrance. Onlookers crowded around, filming him and taking photos. The dish is a beloved staple in the Chinese capital, known for its rich and savory flavor.
A Sour Surprise
However, the "douzhi'er," a fermented soybean drink that is slightly sour and gray-green in color, made the Nvidia CEO wince. Videos of his reaction quickly trended on Weibo, the Chinese social media platform, on Friday afternoon. The drink is a Beijing classic, but only liked by some due to its acquired taste.
Huang then quickly bought a sweet drink from Chinese beverage chain Mixue Bingcheng to recover from the sour experience.
Exploring Nanluoguxiang
Huang was touring the Nanluoguxiang area in Beijing's eastern district, known for its distinctive traditional low-rise homes called hutongs. The area is a mix of shops, restaurants, and is also home to some city residents. Many of the houses had been demolished over the years, but Beijing had preserved a small section, maintaining its historical charm.
The food tour highlights Huang's interest in local culture, even as Nvidia continues to navigate complex trade relations between the US and China.
