Newcastle United are set for a busy summer transfer window, with the trading period now officially open and plenty of incomings and outgoings expected at St James' Park.
Early Moves
The Magpies have already hit the ground running, clinching a deal for young goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen last week and parting company with Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona for around £70 million. That exit has put Newcastle in a strong financial position for the rest of the window, with money to spend early.
They hope to spend it quickly, with Osasuna winger Victor Munoz identified as a key target to replace Gordon. The goalkeeper department will also continue to be refreshed despite Jaouen's arrival, with a second stopper set to be bought. In defence, a new right-back is a priority amid Tino Livramento's ongoing injury issues.
Potential Exits Dominate
Potential exits are dominating the agenda, however, with Sandro Tonali potentially on his way out amid fresh interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Arsenal. After news broke of Tottenham's interest, it has alerted Arsenal to the Italian midfielder's situation. Whether that was intentional or not, you can draw your own conclusions.
What is clear is that Tonali's representatives are pushing for a transfer. He has been offered to a number of clubs, including Spurs, Arsenal, Manchester United, and even Real Madrid. Tonali would prefer a move back to Italy, but Serie A clubs—Juventus being the prime destination—simply don't have the funds to pay the £100 million fee. Juventus failed to qualify for the Champions League next season, which has dented their finances.
This saga looks set to run and run. Belief behind the scenes at St James' Park is that Tonali will go in the summer, with the Telegraph claiming the smart money is on Arsenal despite Spurs' interest. However, don't rule out Manchester City, especially if their bid for Elliot Anderson continues to fall on deaf ears.
