Newcastle in Talks for Spurs' Bergvall Amid £50m Tag

Newcastle United have held high-level transfer talks with Tottenham Hotspur over midfielder Lucas Bergvall, after the Swedish international was offered to the Magpies. Spurs are looking to balance their books following a £180m spending spree that included Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

Bergvall Offered to Newcastle

Chronicle Live understands that Tottenham offered 20-year-old Bergvall to Newcastle, who are in the market for a midfielder. The Magpies enquired about a price tag, with some numbers suggested, but no official bid has been made so far. Conversations took place between the two boards, but Newcastle have not agreed a deal yet.

It is believed that Spurs are happy for it to be known that Bergvall is attracting further interest. Nottingham Forest are also keen and had a £38m bid turned down by Spurs, who feel they can hold out for £50m.

Bidding War Expected

Tottenham like the idea of a bidding war for Bergvall, but Newcastle are sticking to their valuations on both incoming and outgoing business. The Magpies threatened to leave the room on the Tonali deal when Spurs initially refused to go over £90m for the Italian before eventually paying the full asking price of £100m. United would not hesitate to do likewise on any players coming in as they look to stick to their plan and budget.

Bergvall said in June: "Whatever happens after that, I’ll deal with it then. I’m fully focused on the World Cup. It’s been a tough season, as I said. But now the focus is on the World Cup and being here."

Other Midfield Options

Newcastle have a number of options they are exploring for a midfielder, including Brazilian international Danilo, of Botafogo. They also admire Auxerre playmaker Kevin Danois, although he is more of an attacking option. Bergvall, a teammate of Anthony Elanga at international level, can operate as a No 6 or a No 8.
