These chips represent a fundamental shift in philosophy. Instead of chasing sheer benchmark power like some competitors, Qualcomm has focused on efficiency and responsiveness, mirroring the approach of Apple Silicon. Built on a cutting-edge 3nm manufacturing process, the X2 Plus is claimed to deliver 35% faster single-core performance than its predecessor while using 43% less power.
This efficiency is the key to the promised MacBook-rivalling battery life. Furthermore, all three chips in the X2 series include identical neural processing hardware, enabling a staggering 80 trillion operations per second. This allows advanced AI features—such as real-time meeting transcription and local file summarisation—to run directly on the device without needing a cloud connection.
Leading Brands Commit to the New Platform
Major laptop manufacturers are quickly adopting the new silicon. Lenovo's Yoga Slim 7x will be available with either the X2 Plus or X2 Elite chip. HP and Asus have also confirmed they will roll out Snapdragon X2-powered laptops later in 2026, with Asus committing the top-tier X2 Elite Extreme chip to its flagship Zenbook models.
During hands-on demonstrations at CES, these machines showed impressive capability. They handled creative tasks like music production and image editing smoothly and remained remarkably cool and quiet under load—a trait long associated with Apple's hardware. While final prices are yet to be announced, they are expected to be competitive with devices like the MacBook Air.
Closing the Gap: A Genuine Alternative to MacBook?
The historical weakness of Windows on ARM has been software compatibility. Qualcomm is actively working to close this gap, announcing continued collaboration with software giants like Adobe to optimise popular creative apps for the new platform.
For dedicated MacBook users, the comfort of Apple's ecosystem remains a powerful draw. However, the combination of exceptional battery efficiency, potent on-device AI, and a growing software library makes the new Snapdragon X2 laptops the most compelling alternative to date.
