BT's Openreach has confirmed a major broadband speed upgrade, bringing its next-generation XGS-PON technology to more homes across the UK. The platform, already installed in areas including Guildford, is now being rolled out to additional properties, promising blisteringly fast downloads.
By the end of the year, it is hoped that one million users will have access to this 'turbocharged' technology, with many more properties added over the next five years.
Speeds Up to 8Gbps
Once installed, XGS-PON can provide speeds in excess of 8Gbps, which is 28 times faster than the download speed a typical UK household experiences today. At that rate, it would take a few seconds to download a full HD movie, compared to almost 10 minutes using old-fashioned copper cables.
Openreach cables are used by numerous Internet Service Providers, including BT, Sky, EE, Plusnet and TalkTalk, so the upgrade could benefit customers of those providers.
Investment in Digital Future
“Our Full Fibre network already offers Gigabit capable broadband to more than 23.4 million premises, and more than 9.4 million customers have upgraded so far,” said Trevor Linney, Openreach’s Director of Network Technology. “As demand for data continues to grow, our investment in XGS-PON technology will enable us to offer even higher speeds over the same network, and the additional capacity needed to support the UK's digital future.”
Linney added: “By continuing to invest in upgrades, we’re delivering a platform that will power the next generation of technology, from AI-enabled services, smart homes and future mobile networks, to cloud-based business and public services.”
Pricing and Availability
BT-owned EE is currently offering those with access to XGS-PON an Advanced Full Fibre 2.3Gbps plan for £54.99 per month, and an 8Gbps plan from £74.99 per month. Most homes may not need these rapid speeds, but busy properties with children downloading games and parents working from home could benefit from the upgrade.
More information about which areas are next to receive this boost will be confirmed in the coming months.
