MG2 Electric Supermini Set to 'Make You Smile' with £20k Price Tag
Chinese-owned British brand MG is preparing to launch its most affordable electric vehicle yet, with the MG2 supermini arriving later this year. Exclusive renderings reveal how this new model might look, positioning it as a direct rival to upcoming vehicles like the Renault Twingo.
Affordable Electric Entry Point
The MG2 will slot into MG's range beneath the recently launched £23,495 MG4 Urban, with industry experts predicting a starting price around the £20,000 mark. This places it among a wave of new, affordable all-electric superminis expected to hit the market over the next twelve months.
MG design chief Jozef Kaban has confirmed the MG2 will be something special that will "make you smile." While remaining coy about the official name, Kaban emphasized: "It's going to be a good-looking car. And from the outside and inside, it's a car that you will recognise as being authentic as an MG. I think the family is going to be proud."
Design and Platform Details
The MG2 is expected to utilize the new E3 electric platform first introduced on the MG4 Urban. This front-wheel drive architecture currently offers two battery options in the MG4 Urban: a 43kWh unit claiming 201 miles of range and a 54kWh version claiming 258 miles. Even with the smaller battery adapted for the compact MG2, drivers can anticipate approximately 220 miles of range - ideal for an affordable city car.
Design work has likely involved collaboration between MG's London Marylebone design centre, which Kaban describes as having "lots of great young designers," and the brand's Shanghai design studio. Kaban, who joined MG nearly two years ago and consulted MG-owning friends to understand the brand's heritage, appreciates the rapid pace at which the Chinese-owned company operates.
Cyber Models and Future Direction
Kaban's most significant impact at MG thus far has been with the MG Cyber X compact SUV, first revealed at last year's Shanghai motor show and later displayed at the UK's Goodwood Festival of Speed. Although non-committal about production plans, Kaban remains enthusiastic about the Cyber X potentially reaching the market, encouraged by positive public reaction at Goodwood.
"I think there's room in my garage," Kaban remarked. "I think it will be good and it makes sense. We had lots of small cards at Goodwood that people were writing about the Cyber X... I spent some evenings just reading them and it was lovely. Therefore, we might surprise as well in that direction."
The design boss hinted that MG's Cyber models could occupy a distinct position within the lineup, similar to how the premium IM5 and IM6 vehicles operate separately. "Cyber can stand for something, maybe something a little bit out of the traditional, a little bit unexpected," Kaban suggested. "Therefore, yeah, I see opportunity and I believe that this could be one of the scenarios that we can think about."
With the MG2 representing MG's most accessible electric offering yet and the potential expansion of the Cyber sub-brand, the British marque under Chinese ownership appears poised for significant growth in the competitive electric vehicle market.
