Meta Considers Sweeping Workforce Reductions Exceeding 20 Percent
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is reportedly planning to slash more than 20 percent of its global workforce as it intensifies its investment in artificial intelligence and automation technologies. According to sources cited by Reuters, these potential cuts could impact over 15,000 employees at the tech giant, marking a significant restructuring effort.
Strategic Shift Toward AI and Automation
Senior executives at Meta have instructed leaders across the organisation to begin developing plans to reduce headcount. This move comes as the company channels billions of dollars into AI research, data centres, and powerful new models. While the exact scale of the layoffs remains undecided, if implemented, this would represent Meta's largest job purge since CEO Mark Zuckerberg initiated his 'year of efficiency' in 2022, which saw the elimination of more than 21,000 roles.
Meta employed approximately 79,000 workers at the end of the previous year. A company spokesperson responded to the reports by telling the Daily Mail that these claims constitute 'speculative reporting about theoretical approaches,' indicating that no final decisions have been made.
Massive Financial Commitment to Artificial Intelligence
Zuckerberg is doubling down on AI, allocating vast resources to expand Meta's technological capabilities. The company operates 31 data centres worldwide, providing the server infrastructure necessary to process and store the billions of messages, posts, and images shared every second on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
In its fourth-quarter earnings report released in January, Meta disclosed that it expects to spend between $115 billion and $135 billion on AI initiatives this year alone. When combined with planned investments from Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft, total AI expenditure by these four technology behemoths could approach an astonishing $700 billion.
Efficiency Gains and Market Response
Despite the reports of impending layoffs, Meta's push to enhance efficiency through AI tools appears to be yielding positive results. Investors responded favourably to the company's strategic direction, with Meta's stock rising 3 percent to 632 in early trading following the news.
Meta is not alone in connecting artificial intelligence adoption with workforce reductions. Amazon eliminated approximately 16,000 positions in January during its own restructuring while simultaneously investing heavily in AI development. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey is cutting half the jobs at his payments firm, Block, as it transitions toward smaller, automation-powered teams.
Broader Industry Trend Toward AI-Driven Restructuring
Dorsey explained on X in late February that this decisive action was necessary to take 'hard, clear action now' rather than gradually reducing positions and potentially damaging employee morale. Software company Atlassian has also announced plans to reduce its workforce by about 10 percent to concentrate resources on AI development.
According to consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, more than 12,000 layoffs across the United States this year have already been directly attributed to artificial intelligence integration and automation initiatives.
