Manchester United are set to welcome Colombian midfielder Cristian Orozco to Carrington next month for evaluation after his transfer from Fortaleza CEIF is finalised. The 17-year-old will turn 18 shortly before completing the move, allowing the club to proceed with the signing.
Orozco's Development Plan
Upon arrival, Orozco will be assessed by United's coaching staff, who will then create a tailored development plan for the upcoming season. It is likely that the teenager will remain at the club to acclimatise to his new environment after relocating from South America. This approach mirrors the club's handling of previous young signings from abroad.
Seko Kone and Diego Leon, who joined from Mali and Paraguay respectively, spent their first season with the Under-21s. In contrast, Enzo Kana-Biyik, who came from France, was immediately loaned to Ineos-owned Lausanne Sport due to his prior European experience at Le Havre. Orozco is expected to require a similar adjustment period as Kone and Leon.
Support and Potential Loan
United will arrange English lessons for Orozco to help him settle in Manchester. While a loan move next season is possible, no decision will be made until after his assessment. The club views Orozco as a first-team prospect, having already given him a tour of Carrington and Old Trafford in December, where he also trained with the academy sides. The midfielder made 11 senior squad appearances for Fortaleza CEIF this season, including two starts in Colombia's top flight.
Ederson Deal Progressing
United are also closing in on the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson. An agreement has been reached for a £35 million fee, plus £3.8 million in add-ons. The Brazilian international still needs to undergo a medical, which could be delayed due to his potential involvement in the World Cup with Brazil's national team.
United's expanded academy recruitment overseas is a direct response to post-Brexit regulations that restrict signings from Europe. The club's strategy of acquiring promising youngsters from non-European markets is considered low-risk and high-reward.
