Manchester United's summer transfer window is increasingly focused on overhauling their midfield, with Manu Kone emerging as a prime target. The AS Roma midfielder has been identified as a more affordable alternative to Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni, who is not for sale.
Kone's World Cup Breakthrough
Kone impressed for France at the World Cup, starting most games after an initial watching brief. His performances, particularly in the quarter-final against Morocco, caught the attention of top clubs. Football Italia editor Lorenzo Bettoni noted the surprise at Kone's prominence over Tchouameni, but explained that Deschamps' training-ground observations justified the decision.
Serie A Talent Underrated
Despite perceptions that Serie A lags behind other top leagues, Bettoni argued that talents like Kone are often underestimated. He highlighted Kone's steady improvement and physical attributes, which make him a strong box-to-box midfielder rather than a playmaker. His stamina, tackling, and work rate are key strengths.
Financial Pressure on Roma
Roma's financial situation could force them to sell Kone for as little as £45m, significantly less than Bournemouth's valuation of Alex Scott. Bettoni warned that United must act quickly, as Roma may need to sell before other targets like Matias Soule or Mile Svilar are moved on. If those sales happen, Roma might no longer be compelled to listen to offers for Kone.
United have already secured Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, and Kone could complete their midfield rebuild. Bettoni believes the 25-year-old is ready to step into the starting lineup immediately.
