Manchester United have withdrawn from both the EFL Trophy and the National League Cup for the 2026-27 season as the club prioritises first-team training opportunities and individual development for its most promising young talents. The decision follows United's qualification for the Champions League, which also secures their place in the UEFA Youth League for Under-19s, raising concerns about an excessively congested fixture schedule for their Professional Development Phase (PDP) group.
Fixture overload prompts academy rethink
United's academy officials calculated that the Under-21s could have been required to compete in Premier League 2, the UEFA Youth League, the Premier League International Cup, the EFL Trophy, and the National League Cup this season, in addition to U-18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup commitments. They felt this risked upsetting the balance between competitive matches and valuable development time.
As a result, the club opted to withdraw from the EFL Trophy and the National League Cup. United entered the National League Cup for the first time last season, playing against National League first-team squads. The EFL Trophy, which provides matches against Football League first-team sides, has been regarded as a worthwhile developmental competition.
Previous EFL Trophy performance
United's youngsters defeated Notts County last season in the EFL Trophy but were beaten by both Barnsley and Lincoln City during the group stage. The club has participated in the competition every season since 2019/20, progressing from the group stage on three occasions and reaching the last 16 in 2022/23, which remains their best performance.
Premier League International Cup retained
The decision to pull out of the EFL Trophy while continuing in the Premier League International Cup was driven by the diverse range of fixtures the latter tournament provides, with matches against academy teams from various nations and playing philosophies. Academy officials believed the encounter with Real Madrid at Old Trafford last year offered a valuable test for the club's emerging talent.
Streamlined squad and individual focus
The move to reduce the fixture list comes as United anticipate maintaining a more compact Under-21s squad. While they will continue to attract top young prospects, sources indicate they will be more discerning about recruitment. Attention will shift towards individual progression, creating additional training ground time and greater chances for the most promising youngsters to participate in first-team sessions, rather than staying with the Under-21s throughout an intensive fixture schedule.
Old Trafford sources confirmed United remain committed to both tournaments they have withdrawn from and that their young players gained valuable experience from each. They will assess the fixture programme before the 2027/28 campaign and may opt to rejoin both competitions.
