Manchester United are on the verge of a double transfer swoop as manager Michael Carrick prepares for his first full season in charge. The club has yet to make any additions this summer, but a goalkeeper and a midfielder are expected to arrive soon.
Goalkeeper Deal Imminent
United are set to sign Wales under-21 goalkeeper Kit Margetson from Swansea City. The 19-year-old, son of former England goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson, will require a compensation fee. Reports indicate that Margetson will be loaned out to an EFL club for first-team experience. He joined Swansea at under-15 level and spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Connah's Quay Nomads.
Midfield Targets
United's pursuit of a top-class midfielder continues after missing out on Elliot Anderson (Manchester City) and Mateus Fernandes (Tottenham). Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and Brighton's Carlos Baleba have been on the shortlist, but both may be overlooked. Brighton have refused to lower their £100m asking price for Baleba, while Wharton is considered too similar to Kobbie Mainoo.
Bournemouth's Alex Scott is now the primary midfield target. Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni has also been admired for months, and Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha has a supporter in director of football Jason Wilcox, who worked with him at Manchester City's academy.
Carrick's First Pre-Season
Michael Carrick, who led United to a top-four finish in his second interim spell, has earned a permanent contract. He will begin his first pre-season as manager next week. The club expects to confirm Ederson's £35m transfer from Atalanta once Brazil's World Cup 2026 campaign ends.
