20-Year-Old Runs Newcastle's Busiest Karaoke Bar

Meet Josh Bamford, the 20-year-old who runs The Singing Canary, one of Newcastle's busiest bars and one of the UK's youngest pub operators. Since opening in late May 2025, the karaoke venue has become a favourite for its self-service karaoke machines, chic upstairs bar, affordable drinks, and party atmosphere. Josh, who previously worked behind the bar under former owners, took over the venue—previously known as The Dog, #Central, and Queens—a few months ago and has seized the opportunity.

From Hard Work to Leadership

Josh told ChronicleLive that his determination and work ethic come from his late mother, who died when he was in his early teens. She worked three jobs, 18 hours a day, seven days a week to support the family. Josh said, 'When I was 13 my mam passed away. She was a grafter... I learnt from that. When she died I thought it could have gone two ways—I could have gone off the rails or use what she taught me and turn it into a lifestyle.' His older brothers have also found success in their careers, inspiring him to make his mother proud.

Plans for Expansion

Before running The Singing Canary, Josh worked as a chef and managed his own kitchen, gaining experience in marketing and promotions. He now plans to evolve the bar: 'There's definitely a 2.0 coming in the next five years. The first year is a challenge requiring full commitment, the second year should see payoff, and the third and fourth years will involve building it up.'

Front Row Seat to the Fun

As boss, Josh enjoys watching people of all ages party together. He hears a lot of karaoke, with Amy Winehouse's 'Valerie' being the most popular, alongside The Killers' 'Mr Brightside' and Pink hits. When asked what he would sing, Josh joked, 'If I had to I think it would be something by Adele—I don't have the voice for it though!'
