Lindores Abbey Releases Nectere, a New Sherry Cask Whisky
Lindores Abbey Launches Nectere Sherry Cask Whisky

Lindores Abbey Distillery, one of Scotland's most picturesque distilleries, has launched its latest expression, Nectere, a new single malt whisky matured in a quartet of sherry casks. The distillery, located in Fife and often described as the spiritual home of Scotch whisky, draws on centuries of tradition for this release.

Inspired by Monastic Heritage

The name Nectere comes from the Latin word conectere, meaning to link or connect. According to the distillery team, Nectere unites "centuries of knowledge in a single glass," inspired by the monks who first distilled at the Abbey in 1494 and the evolving tradition of Sherry production from Spain.

Four Sherry Cask Types

The whisky is matured in a combination of four sherry cask types: Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, Amontillado, and Palo Cortado. Each cask contributes distinct characteristics to deliver depth, colour, and complexity. The distillery stated that Oloroso forms the backbone, providing structure, dried fruit, and nutty character, while Pedro Ximénez contributes richness, sweetness, and enhanced natural colour. Amontillado adds marmalade notes, roasted nuttiness, and lifted aromatics, and Palo Cortado introduces elegance, distinguished balsamic, and subtle oxidative notes.

Local Barley Connection

The Fife barley used in Nectere is grown on the same land once farmed by the Lindores Abbey monks, creating a meaningful connection between the landscape, the local farming community, and the whisky itself.

Tasting Notes

The team described the single malt as a "layered, full-bodied sherry-driven" dram with "refined complexity." Drinkers can expect sweet treacle, red apples, vanilla custard cream, and cinnamon on the nose, with mellow molasses, chocolate raisins, nutty macaroons, toffee, and warming spices on the palate. The finish is "long and creamy," with lingering nutmeg and cinnamon.

Future Sourcing Strategy

Lindores Abbey Distillery will build new, direct relationships with modern bodegas as part of a longer-term sourcing strategy, adding Spanish provenance and quality control to the cask programme.
