Lidl Expands Self-Scanning Trial to 37 UK Stores

Lidl is expanding its self-scanning trial to 37 additional UK stores throughout July, building on an initial seven-store pilot. The feature, called Lidl & Go, is integrated within the Lidl Plus app, allowing customers to scan products as they shop, track spending and savings in real time, and complete their purchase at checkout using their own smartphones. No dedicated in-store scanning devices are required.

Rollout Across Scotland and Southern England

The new stores are located across Scotland, the South East, and the South of England. The rollout includes locations such as Windmill Street in Motherwell, Seafield Road in Edinburgh, and stores in Aberdeen, Inverness, Dundee, Dumfries, East Kilbride, Bellshill, Larkhall, Whitburn, Livingston, Stevenston, Greenock, Stirling, Kirkcaldy, Perth, and more. In the South, stores include East Grinstead, Sevenoaks, Woolston, Gosport, Christchurch, Portsmouth, Waterlooville, Hayling Island, Brighton, Shoreham, Alton, Farnborough, Basingstoke, Salisbury, Burgess Hill, and Billingshurst.

Customer Feedback Drives Expansion

Lidl reported that feedback from the initial trial showed particular interest from customers shopping with children and those seeking greater flexibility. Louise Weise, chief customer officer at Lidl GB, said: 'The early response from the initial phase of Lidl & Go has been really encouraging. Customers are telling us they value the control and visibility it gives them over their spend, and the flexibility to shop at their own pace. This next wave of stores brings the feature to many more customers, and we’ll continue to take on board feedback to evolve the offering as we go.'

Part of Broader Digital Investment

The expansion is part of Lidl's investment in digital convenience, which includes a 60% increased investment in personalised coupons on the Lidl Plus app this year and the introduction of the Lidl Points rewards system in May. Lidl emphasised that traditional payment methods and staffed tills will remain available across all stores, ensuring choice for all customers.
