Lidl is expanding its Lidl & Go self-scanning service to 19 stores across Scotland following a successful pilot in seven locations. The supermarket chain aims to help customers manage their budgets more effectively while shopping.
How Lidl & Go Works
Integrated into the Lidl Plus app, Lidl & Go allows shoppers to scan products as they place them in their trolley or basket, providing a running total of their spending and savings throughout the shop. It also offers a more seamless checkout experience. Unlike systems at Asda, Tesco, and Sainsbury's, Lidl customers use their own smartphones rather than dedicated in-store devices.
Stores Participating in the Rollout
The 19 stores include locations in Perth, Dundee, Edinburgh, Lanarkshire, and other areas. The full list is: Windmill Street, Motherwell; Kelso; Seafield Road, Edinburgh; Bucksburn, Aberdeen; Torry, Aberdeen; Inverness; Lochee, Dundee; Dumfries; St James Street, East Kilbride; Bellshill; Larkhall; Whitburn; Alderstone Road, Livingston; Stevenston; Greenock; Weaver Row, Stirling; Kirkcaldy; Riggs Road, Perth; Macalpine Road, Dundee.
Customer Feedback and Benefits
Early feedback indicates the tool is particularly useful for customers shopping with young children and those who prefer to browse at their own pace while monitoring their budget. Louise Weise, Chief Customer Officer at Lidl GB, said: “The early response from the initial phase of Lidl & Go has been really encouraging. Customers are telling us they value the control and visibility it gives them over their spend, and the flexibility to shop at their own pace. This next wave of stores brings the feature to many more customers, and we'll continue to take on board feedback to evolve the offering as we go.”
Digital Investment and Traditional Options
Lidl continues to invest in digital services, but staffed checkouts and standard payment options will remain available across all UK stores. The retailer has also increased investment in personalised coupons through the Lidl Plus app by 60% this year, following the launch of Lidl Points in May, a rewards scheme giving shoppers flexibility over earning, spending, and redeeming savings. Other digital offerings include Lidl Pay, Click, Reserve & Collect, and digital shopping lists.
