Lamine Camara is poised to discover his next club following Senegal's heartbreaking elimination from the World Cup by Belgium. The 22-year-old midfielder, valued at around £35 million before the tournament, has seen his price tag potentially increase. He has been consistently linked with Newcastle United throughout 2026, but recent reports from The Athletic suggest the Magpies are no longer actively pursuing him.
Newcastle's Midfield Search
Newcastle have remained silent when asked about Camara as a genuine target. However, they are seeking a replacement for Sandro Tonali, with a portion of the £100 million transfer budget allocated for a midfield signing. Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool are also keen on Camara, leaving his Premier League destination uncertain for the 2026/27 season.
An alternative midfield star put to Newcastle is Burnley's Lesley Ugochukwu, who would be open to leaving the Lancashire club. The Clarets paid £24 million for Ugochukwu, who is represented by the same agency as Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, potentially making the deal easier to complete. Ugochukwu left Chelsea 12 months ago for Burnley but could not prevent their relegation despite a valiant effort. He has been linked with Galatasaray and balanced his defensive duties with offensive contributions, scoring three goals and providing one assist.
Camara's Comments and Other Targets
Speaking on his future earlier in the summer, Camara said, “We don’t know what the future holds. But I’m at Monaco, and I’m happy to be here playing in France.” Newcastle were also beaten to the signing of Victor Munoz by Liverpool earlier in the summer, despite having agreement from the player, Osasuna, and Real Madrid. A late approach from Andoni Iraola swayed the deal to Liverpool, denying Newcastle the Spain international.
Talks for Camara are not as advanced as those for Munoz, with Newcastle declining to comment on the possibility of the midfielder joining St James' Park.
