Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry has signed a new contract with the club and immediately secured a loan move to Sporting Lisbon for the 2026-27 season, according to Portuguese outlet Record.
Rapid rise at Stamford Bridge
The 19-year-old made his first-team debut last season, featuring three times for the Blues during a turbulent campaign. Derry only joined Chelsea from Crystal Palace in 2025 after progressing through the youth ranks at Selhurst Park. Despite making just one Premier League appearance and two in the FA Cup, the forward has attracted significant interest from top European clubs.
Sporting beats competition for Derry
Bayern Munich were linked with a move for Derry this summer, but he will instead spend the season in Lisbon. Record reports that Premier League sides Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, as well as Championship club Southampton, also expressed interest. Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, now manager of newly-promoted Coventry City, wanted to bring Derry in on loan. However, the teenager opted for Sporting, who finished second in the Primeira Liga last season and will compete in the Champions League.
International pedigree and high praise
Derry is the son of former QPR, Leeds and Crystal Palace player Shaun Derry. He has represented England up to Under-19 level, scoring twice in the group stage of the 2025 Under-19 European Championship, though England were eliminated after finishing third behind Netherlands and Germany. Rio Ferdinand has also hailed Derry as one of the Premier League's brightest young talents. Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, the former Manchester United defender said: 'If you were going to put your money on four kids right now, in the Premier League to do their thing, based on what you're seeing now, you've got Rio at Liverpool, you've got Max Dowman, you've got JJ Gabriel at Manchester United and Jesse Derry at Chelsea. Jesse Derry, I know his dad, Shaun, he's an ex-player, but I know the kid, wow, ridiculous, not only a talent, but an actual, like, as a kid who loves, loves the game.'
