Japan Airlines (JAL) is set to launch a two-year trial using humanoid robots for ground handling tasks at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, beginning in May 2026. The initiative, developed in partnership with GMO AI & Robotics, seeks to alleviate staff pressure and address labor shortages driven by rising tourism and a declining working-age population.

Trial Phases and Objectives

Initially, the robots will focus on cargo handling, with plans to later expand to cabin cleaning and operating ground support equipment. Unlike fixed automated systems, humanoid machines were chosen for their ability to integrate into existing airport facilities and aircraft layouts without major modifications.

Safety and Operational Checks

The phased trial will first assess robot safety at airport sites before progressing to operational checks that mirror real conditions. The long-term goal is to achieve autonomous operation, reducing reliance on human workers for physically demanding tasks.
