Jaguar unveils £130k Type 01 EV as opinion divides motorists

Jaguar has finally unveiled its hotly anticipated Type 01 electric car in New York, with opinion sharply divided over the new model. Orders will open in early 2027, and the car carries a price tag of £130,000.

The road-going Type 01 follows the concept Type 00 revealed at Miami Art Week in December 2024. The follow-up was first announced in May, and motorists have been keen to see the model since. The curtains were opened on Tuesday night, with Jaguar bosses saying the car heralded a new era for the marque.

Design and technology

Rawdon Glover, managing director at Jaguar, said: “From its dramatic design to its captivating drive, Type 01 distils the essence of Jaguar into a luxury grand tourer for a new era. Type 01 is the foundation of this British brand, one that makes no compromise between design and engineering in our quest to create objects of desire, just as it was in the days of the E-type and XJS.”

Jaguar says the Type 01 is set to be the most technologically advanced and powerful car in the brand’s history. For a manufacturer known for luxurious sports cars with sweeping curves, such as the E-Type and D-Type, the boxy outline of the Type 01 is certain to catch attention. The lack of a rear window has been swapped out for an innovative digital rear-view display positioned centrally at the bottom of the windscreen.

Mixed reaction

Reaction has been mixed, with EV fans and younger motorists appearing to love the new look, while classic petrolheads are less impressed. EV expert Sawyer Merritt posted: “Maybe a hot take, but I think the new all-electric Jaguar Type 01 looks pretty good. Their initial marketing strategy was terrible, but this production version looks good and somewhat cyberpunk-like. Now the question is, will anybody buy it.”

Jordan Marsden, online personality ‘The EV Guy’, said: “Jaguar have done exactly what they said they were going to do. And people are already missing the point.” He added: “Jaguar isn’t trying to build a car for the mass market. It isn’t trying to compete for buyers looking at a £40,000 family SUV. It’s deliberately moving Jaguar into a completely different part of the market.”

Critics and sales outlook

However, not everyone has been convinced. Petrolhead @MrAndyMich posted: “The new Jaguar Type 01 Looks horrible. May as well take the ‘Jaguar’ off it & stick ‘Omoda’ on it instead (or any car manufacturer that appears to be named after a letters game of Countdown). Someone would quite literally need to pay me for me to drive one of these. Awful.”

Carwow’s Matt Watson added: “I think initial sales will be strong but the Type 001 could end up being a little bit like the Tesla Cybertruck where it's kind of a novelty car. I know Jaguar has got another car in the pipeline based on the same platform. It will be some form of SUV and they need that one to come through very soon because people are more likely to buy an SUV than this big, strange, long coupe-ish mad thing.”
