Fernandes Joins Spurs; Tonali Deal Agreed

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Sporting CP for a fee of £40 million, with the player expressing his delight at joining the club. The deal comes as Spurs have also agreed a £100 million transfer for AC Milan star Sandro Tonali, according to sources close to the negotiations.

Fernandes Completes Move to North London

Mateus Fernandes, 22, has signed a five-year contract with Tottenham, becoming the club's third major signing of the summer window. The Portuguese midfielder made 35 appearances for Sporting last season, scoring four goals and providing six assists. He said: "I'm very happy to be here. Tottenham is a huge club with a great history, and I can't wait to get started."

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has been keen to strengthen his midfield options, and Fernandes is seen as a versatile addition capable of playing both as a deep-lying playmaker and in a more advanced role. The transfer was finalized after weeks of negotiations, with Sporting initially holding out for a higher fee.

£100m Tonali Deal Reached

In a separate development, Tottenham have agreed a £100 million deal with AC Milan for midfielder Sandro Tonali, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. The 24-year-old Italy international is expected to undergo a medical in London later this week. Tonali has been a key figure for Milan, helping them win the Serie A title in 2022 and reaching the Champions League semi-finals last season.

The deal would make Tonali the most expensive signing in Tottenham's history, surpassing the £63 million paid for Richarlison in 2022. Personal terms are believed to have been agreed, with Tonali set to earn £250,000 per week. The move represents a significant statement of intent from Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who has backed Postecoglou with substantial funds this summer.

Impact on Tottenham's Squad

The arrivals of Fernandes and Tonali are expected to transform Tottenham's midfield. With Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur already at the club, Postecoglou will have a wealth of options. Fernandes is likely to be used as a creative force, while Tonali brings defensive solidity and leadership. The club has also been linked with a new centre-back and a winger before the transfer window closes.

Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League last season, securing Europa League qualification. The new signings are part of an ambitious plan to challenge for the top four and potentially end the club's trophy drought, which dates back to 2008.
