Experts Agree on One Method to Stop Weeds in Gravel
Experts Reveal Best Way to Stop Weeds in Gravel

Weeds are a common nuisance in gravelled paths, patios, and driveways. Gardeners invest time and money to create these areas, only to see unwanted plants appear. Unlike weeds between patio slabs, those in gravel are harder to remove with a patio knife.

Understanding the Weed Problem

Connor Towning, lead horticulturist at Beards & Daisies, explains: "Most people treat symptoms without understanding cause. Weeds come from seeds blowing in or roots pushing up from below. If same weeds keep returning in same spots, it's usually a membrane issue underneath."

Removing Existing Weeds

For small areas, hand-pulling is straightforward but ensure you remove roots, not just leaves. Luke Newnes, gardening expert at Hillarys, agrees: "Simply pulling off tops won't solve the problem; they'll grow straight back." For stubborn weeds, a targeted weed killer helps. Connor recommends glyphosate-based products for deep-rooted perennials like dandelions and docks, as they travel down into root systems.

Preventing Future Weeds

The best long-term solution is a good-quality membrane under gravel. Luke advises: "Re-laying gravel with a strong membrane and decent depth makes a huge difference." Connor adds: "Lift gravel, lay membrane properly, and relay. Ensure gravel is at least five centimetres deep; shallow gravel lets light through, allowing weed seeds to germinate."

Regular Maintenance

After removing weeds and installing membrane, maintain the area. Connor suggests regular raking to disturb weeds before they establish: "Keeping gravel clean and moving makes a real difference." Luke emphasises removing leaves, soil, and dust, as these create ideal weed environments. For driveways or high-traffic areas, edging with metal or stone helps prevent gravel spreading and soil intrusion. "No option is completely maintenance-free, but proper laying and care make weeds an occasional nuisance," Luke concludes.
