eBay experienced a prolonged technical outage that began on Sunday, April 26, and persisted through Monday, leaving many users unable to access key features of the digital auction platform. The disruption affected both buyers and sellers, with some unable to complete payments and others unable to list or sell their items. By Tuesday morning, the site appeared to be functioning normally for many, though individual experiences varied.
Outage Details
The outage started on Sunday afternoon and continued into Monday. According to Downdetector, which tracks user-reported outages, complaints began spiking around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday and intensified through the evening. By 10:30 p.m., there were more than 1,300 outage reports, though this number dropped by half within the next hour.
Impact on Users
Sellers were particularly affected, as many relied on eBay's API to manage their listings. Some reported being unable to access the API for nearly six hours, preventing them from listing new products. One user wrote, "It’s been nearly 6 hours since the API went down, and we have no word from support." Another user complained they could not pay for an item they had purchased.
Company Response
eBay acknowledged the issues in a statement to Retail Dive, saying, "We’re aware that some customers have been experiencing intermittent technical issues since Sunday afternoon on parts of the eBay platform. Our teams are actively working to restore full functionality as quickly as possible. We appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to resolve this." The company did not provide further details on the cause of the outage.
Hacktivist Claim
The Iran-linked hacktivist group 313 Team claimed responsibility for the outage, stating on social media that they launched an attack targeting eBay. This claim has not been verified. The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on Bluesky and the Kuwaiti government's infrastructure amid the U.S. war with Iran. The Independent has requested comment from eBay.
