Coventry City have made enquiries about signing Marseille midfielder Angel Gomes, according to reports in France. The 25-year-old is reportedly keen on returning to the Premier League after spending the second half of last season on loan at Wolves, who were relegated.
Gomes wants another chance in England
Gomes came through Manchester United's academy but failed to break into the first team before joining Lille, where he impressed enough to earn an England debut under Lee Carsley in 2024. He then signed for Marseille last summer.
Despite Marseille not wishing to sell, they will not stand in his way if a suitable deal can be agreed. Due to their financial situation, the French club need to sell this summer, and as one of their top earners, Gomes—who is under contract until 2028—is a top candidate to leave.
Coventry's Premier League return
Coventry are preparing for their first Premier League season since 2001 after cruising to the Championship title. They kick off against champions Arsenal on August 21. Manager Frank Lampard has already spent £86 million on five players, including goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton.
More signings are expected to give the Sky Blues the best chance of avoiding relegation. Reports also link Marseille striker Neal Maupay and defender Leonardo Balerdi with Premier League clubs.
