Celtic Target Tjark Ernst Set to Decide Future This Week

Celtic are on transfer alert as reported target Tjark Ernst is set to decide his future this week. The 23-year-old Hertha Berlin goalkeeper is valued at £4 million and is a key target for the Hoops ahead of the new season. However, Celtic face competition from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, with Ajax also linked to the highly-rated former Germany Under-21s shotstopper.

Hertha Berlin Hopeful of Keeping Ernst

Ernst returned to pre-season training in Berlin this week, and Hertha have acknowledged significant interest in the player but remain hopeful he will stay with the Bundesliga 2 club. Hertha boss Stefan Leitl commented: "Yes, of course I want as many players as possible to stay. But I think the situation is quite clear. There have apparently been offers for him. I believe Tjark is now in a position to make a decision. And we'll wait for that. And we have to prepare ourselves for either outcome. But I hope he stays."

Hertha sports director Peter Gorlich added: "I've been on the phone so much about Tjark that I've lost track of who was actually on the line! We are the player's contractual partner. He's still here. But of course, a goalkeeper like him, who already has such charisma at such a young age, attracts interest from other clubs. Tjark also knows what he has with us, what position he can play here in the future. We'll see what the various parties decide. This weighing-up of options is never easy. Firstly, we're talking about people and secondly, we're talking about key squad positions. And the goalkeeper is, after all, a crucial position. Nothing is ruled out, but we're prepared should certain scenarios arise."

Daizen Maeda Reflects on World Cup Exit

Meanwhile, Celtic forward Daizen Maeda has issued a heartfelt apology after Japan's heartbreaking World Cup exit to Brazil. Japan led in the first half but conceded an injury-time goal to lose 2-1. Maeda, who earned praise from former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou for his "world class" pressing, said: "We fought a great game, but the opponent was strong and I think we still have a long way to go. Of course we had the feeling that we could do it, but Brazil is just so skilled and powerful and we ended up spending a lot of time defending. I think it was just a matter of time before they scored, to be honest. But what we've done up until now remains unchanged. I want to return to Japan with my head held high. So many fans came to the stadium to back us and I know a lot of people stayed up to watch even in the middle of the night in Japan, so I want to thank them all for their support. What we have built together over these past three and a half years since the Qatar World Cup, together with the players, staff, family, fans and supporters, is something I am very proud of. But I apologise for the defeat."
