Zoe, a 39-year-old mobile beauty therapist and lecturer, commutes from Bournemouth to Basingstoke twice a week without a home charger for her electric car. She represents the type of motorist EV doubters claim cannot make electric vehicles work: a long-distance commuter without off-street parking, managing work and parenthood on a sole income.
Why She Switched to an EV
Refuelling her old petrol Nissan Micra and observing the expense mount up was one factor in the move, but the overriding influence was health. Zoe suffers from asthma and lives near the coast at Bournemouth. The pandemic-era satellite imagery showing clearer air made a lasting impression. 'With the world in lockdown there was photographic evidence of smog improving,' she says. 'I just want to be doing my part.'
How She Charges Without a Home Charger
Without off-street parking, Zoe has structured her week around the public charging infrastructure. 'I've just worked out the best hubs along my journeys and I plan everything quite well. I know my range drops more in colder weather and when I've got more passengers and luggage, so I account for this.' Her preferred location is InstaVolt's Winchester Super Hub, which has evolved into a modest ritual within an otherwise demanding timetable. 'I can get a Starbies coffee, listen to my friends' voice notes on WhatsApp, voice note them back and then get back to do a school pickup,' she says. 'It's nice to have 20 minutes to myself on my work days. Life is busy.'
Her EV Journey
Zoe is now on her second EV. Her first, a Nissan Leaf nicknamed Cosmos, was purchased ex-showroom in early 2022. 'It was just the right time,' she says. It performed well for local journeys and the occasional trip into ULEZ London for teaching, but the range fell to around 120 miles in winter and the older CHAdeMO charging standard became progressively restrictive on long journeys. She has since upgraded to a VW ID.3, which she finds smaller but with considerably better range.
Advice for Potential EV Buyers
Her advice to anyone contemplating a second-hand EV is hard-won: 'Really check the real-life driving range, not just what the salesperson tells you. And if it's CHAdeMO, really plan your stops on longer journeys.' Zoe describes her PCP arrangement as 'worry-free motoring'. 'I just pay monthly and then let the garage tell me when I need to bring it in,' she says. 'I'm on a budget with most things but I'm time poor, so I don't have the time to have car troubles.'
Would She Go Back to Petrol or Diesel?
'Never.'
