The iconic snooker game show Big Break is set to return to BBC screens, 24 years after its original run concluded. Paddy McGuinness will host the revived series, taking on the role previously held by Jim Davidson, alongside seven-time world snooker champion Stephen Hendry.
Original Show Legacy
The original show, which ran from 1991 to 2002, was a Saturday evening staple, attracting nearly 14 million viewers at its peak with Davidson and the late John Virgo. The programme became a beloved part of British television culture, blending snooker with entertainment and celebrity participation.
Reimagined Format for Modern Audiences
The BBC stated the new format will be reimagined for contemporary viewers, featuring a brand-new look, fast-paced snooker frames, and innovative camera angles. However, the show will retain the memorable theme tune that fans fondly recall. Twenty half-hour episodes have been commissioned for BBC Two and iPlayer.
The show's return follows the successful revival of other 1990s favourites like Gladiators, indicating a trend of nostalgic programming on British television. Paddy McGuinness, known for his work on Take Me Out and Top Gear, will bring his comedic style to the hosting role, while Stephen Hendry provides expert snooker insight.
Fans of the original series can expect a modernised version that stays true to the spirit of the classic game show. The BBC has not yet announced an air date, but production is expected to begin later this year.
