Newcastle United's new signing Bazoumana Toure has revealed the pivotal role sporting director Ross Wilson played in securing his move to St James' Park. The 20-year-old Ivorian winger joined from Hoffenheim on Sunday evening, signing a long-term contract as the Magpies' replacement for Anthony Gordon, who moved to Barcelona.
Toure's Bundesliga Success
Toure was highly sought after this summer following an impressive season in the Bundesliga, where he scored five goals and provided 12 assists, helping Hoffenheim qualify for European football. Newcastle won the race for his signature, and Toure credited Wilson's "enthusiasm" in negotiations for convincing him to choose Tyneside.
Awaiting Eddie Howe Chat
Speaking to Newcastle United's official website, Toure admitted he has not yet spoken with head coach Eddie Howe. "I've not had the chance to speak with the coach. We've not got to meet up yet, so I haven't ever chatted with him," he said. "But I can tell you I have spoken with the director of football and he told me how keen he was for me to be here. I'm also very excited to be here, and that feeling of enthusiasm he showed me helped me make my choice to come to Newcastle."
Premier League Dream
Toure expressed his long-held ambition to play in the Premier League. "Since I was a young kid I watched the Premier League and I wanted to play there. During this transfer window things were pretty lively but me, all I wanted to do was to play for Newcastle. I don't know, but in my heart of hearts I really wanted to be here at Newcastle and by the grace of God that is actually what happened."
First Outfield Signing Under Wilson
Toure is the first outfield signing of Wilson's tenure as sporting director. After Newcastle saw a move for Victor Munoz hijacked, Toure's praise could boost confidence for the rest of the transfer window as the club continues its reset. Sandro Tonali's £100 million move to Tottenham was confirmed earlier on Monday, leaving Newcastle in need of a new midfielder. The Magpies also target a new goalkeeper, despite signing Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims, as well as a full-back, an attacking midfielder, and potentially a forward. Newcastle are hopeful of concluding a deal for Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, with the 20-year-old impressing at the World Cup with Switzerland.
