EA is preparing to release a major update for Battlefield 6, hoping to reverse growing player dissatisfaction. The game, which initially outperformed Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 both critically and commercially, has seen its popularity wane due to issues like bot-filled lobbies and perceived boring gameplay.
Season 4 Update Details
Battlefield 6 Season 4 launches on July 21, introducing Tsuru Reef, described by EA as the game's largest map to date, featuring sprawling islands, dynamic waves, and a mix of boats, jets, helicopters, and ground vehicles. The update adds two new boat vehicles—the RCB-90 Patrol Boat and 7.7m NSW RHIB—along with four new weapons, including a sniper rifle. Later in the season, the classic map Wake Island will return.
Potential Top Gun Crossover
EA has teased a potential Top Gun crossover, though no official announcement has been made. The overt reference suggests a proper collaboration, which could include themed vehicles or even a Tom Cruise skin. Such crossovers have been criticized in Call of Duty, but EA previously mocked Activision's reliance on celebrity cameos. The trailer has been well-received, with 16,000 likes on YouTube and positive reactions on the Battlefield 6 subreddit.
Fan Backlash Over Bot Lobbies
Since launch, the playerbase has grown divided. Complaints about bot lobbies have persisted for months, with players frustrated by being matched with computer-controlled allies or opponents. One player noted, 'If I want to play in the morning or do some late night gaming, I can’t find non-bot lobbies. During the weekend I tried to play at 10am, but I couldn’t find a single match that wasn’t filled with bots.' Another stated, 'The introduction of bots along with this s***ty matchmaking and disbanding lobbies has completely turned me away from this game.'
Recent negative Steam reviews cite boring gameplay and numerous bugs, though some players report enjoying the game. Layoffs earlier this year across all four development studios likely impacted post-launch support. EA remains committed to Battlefield 6, but must address its polarizing reputation to maintain its lead over Call of Duty.
