Audi Revives A2 Name for New Entry-Level Electric Model Due This Year
Audi has officially confirmed it will resurrect the iconic A2 nameplate for the electric era, with a new compact model called the A2 e-tron set to debut in autumn 2026. The announcement was made at Audi's Annual Media Conference, where the brand detailed plans to expand its electric vehicle lineup at both ends of the market. The A2 e-tron will serve as the entry point to Audi's EV range, specifically targeting urban buyers seeking a smaller, more affordable route into the premium brand.
Echoes of the Original A2 in a Modern Electric Package
The A2 name returns more than two decades after the original model launched in 2002, which was renowned for its lightweight construction and focus on efficiency. Audi states the new A2 e-tron will carry forward that same spirit into the electric age, appealing to customers who prioritise everyday usability, efficiency, and advanced digital connectivity. The company has released a preliminary design sketch that previews a compact silhouette well-suited to urban driving, with subtle nods to the original A2 in its proportions and high-set rear spoiler.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner emphasised the model's direct response to customer demand for more practical electric vehicles. "We've listened. Our customers want electric mobility that impresses in everyday life. The A2 e-tron is our promise to deliver exactly that – efficient, compact, and confident. We're making entry into the electric Audi world easier and more relevant than ever," he said during the conference.
Targeting the Growing Compact EV Market
While full technical specifications and pricing remain to be confirmed, Audi has made it clear the A2 e-tron is aimed squarely at the burgeoning compact electric vehicle market, particularly in urban environments across Europe. Demand for smaller electric cars continues to rise, driven by city-based motorists seeking lower running costs, easy manoeuvrability, and robust real-world efficiency. The A2 e-tron is expected to play a pivotal role in broadening Audi's appeal to a younger, more urban-focused demographic.
This move reflects a broader trend among premium automotive brands, many of which are introducing smaller, more accessible electric models to complement their larger, higher-margin offerings. By establishing a more attainable entry point, Audi aims to capture a significant share of this expanding market segment.
Production and Strategic Significance
Production of the new A2 e-tron will take place at Audi's Ingolstadt plant in Germany, underscoring the company's ongoing investment in its European manufacturing infrastructure. The addition of this new electric model line is part of Audi's comprehensive transition towards electric vehicle production across its global factories.
Döllner highlighted the dual importance of the car for both the brand and its domestic market. "The A2 e-tron is crucial for our brand and also for our German home. With the production of an additional fully-electric model family in Ingolstadt, we are securing jobs and delivering electric mobility 'made in Germany'," he stated.
Part of a Broader Product Expansion
The launch of the A2 e-tron follows a period of rapid product expansion for Audi. The company introduced over twenty new models throughout 2024 and 2025, claiming it now boasts one of the youngest model portfolios in the automotive industry, spanning from compact electric vehicles to large luxury cars.
This expansion is set to continue throughout 2026, with Audi focusing on strengthening both the entry-level and premium segments of its range. Alongside the A2 e-tron, the brand has also confirmed plans for a new flagship SUV, the Q9. Full details on the A2 e-tron, including its specifications and pricing, will be disclosed closer to its official unveiling later this year.
