Apple's New Budget iPhone 17e and MacBook Neo Revealed

Apple's Global Product Launch Introduces Budget-Friendly Devices

Apple's "big week" of product announcements has culminated in the unveiling of several new devices, including a budget-friendly iPhone trim, an entry-level MacBook tier, updated iPad Air models, refreshed monitors, and higher-end chipsets. The new products were showcased at hands-on media events held simultaneously in New York, London, and Shanghai on Wednesday. This strategic move comes as Apple's quarterly earnings have soared to a new record, driven by robust sales of its iPhone 17 models, despite the company's unfulfilled 2024 promise to enhance its Siri assistant with AI technology.

iPhone 17e: A Budget-Conscious Powerhouse

Targeting budget-conscious shoppers, the iPhone 17e features the same A19 chip as the base iPhone 17, ensuring comparable performance. It offers double the standard storage space at 256GB, up from 128GB in the previous 16e model. The camera system has been upgraded to 48 megapixels, and the C1X modem promises faster cellular speeds. While the display is slightly smaller with a lower refresh rate and may appear dimmer, it retains the super retina display and Ceramic Shield 2 system for scratch protection. MagSafe with Qi2 support is included for convenient wireless charging. Starting at $599, it is $200 cheaper than the base iPhone 17 and available in black, white, and light pink.

iPad Air M4: Enhanced Performance and Value

The midrange iPad Air refresh runs on the slightly older M4 chip, still powerful enough for streaming, web browsing, email, and video editing. Cellular versions include the updated C1X modem for faster connections. Notably, Apple has increased the RAM from 8GB to 12GB without a price hike. The 11-inch model starts at $599, and the 13-inch version at $799, both with 128GB of storage.

MacBook Updates: Pro and Neo Models

Apple's high-end Pro laptops have received chip upgrades to the M5 Pro and M5 Max, offering higher performance and battery efficiency, though at increased prices. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro chip starts at $2,199 with 24GB RAM and 1TB storage, a $200 increase from the 2024 base M4 Pro. The 16-inch model starts at $2,699 with similar specs. Both feature Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support, though displays and front-facing cameras remain unchanged.

The brand-new entry-level MacBook Neo, debuting at the event, is a 13-inch laptop with Apple's A18 Pro chip, 256GB storage, two USB-C ports, and 8GB RAM. The 512GB model includes a TouchID sensor. Prices are $599 for the 256GB model and $699 for the upgraded version, with a $100 discount for students and educators. Additionally, the MacBook Air has been refreshed with the base M5 chip, doubled storage to 512GB, and connectivity upgrades, priced at $1,099 for the 13-inch and $1,299 for the 15-inch model.

Studio Display Monitors: High-End Visuals

Apple announced two 5K display monitors: the 27-inch Studio Display and Studio Display XDR. Both feature 5,120 x 2,880 resolutions, embedded 12MP Center Stage cameras, six-speaker audio systems, and Thunderbolt 5 and USB-C ports. The XDR model adds mini-LED backlighting, better contrast, dimming zones, and a 120Hz refresh rate, appealing to gamers and HDR enthusiasts. The base Studio Display is priced at $1,599, while the XDR variant costs $3,299, with upgrade options available.

All announced products will be available for preorder starting Wednesday, marking a significant expansion of Apple's affordable product lineup.
