Apple AirPods Max 2 Launch Next Week with H2 Chip and Enhanced Features
AirPods Max 2 Launch: H2 Chip, Improved ANC, and New Features

Apple has unexpectedly announced the launch of the AirPods Max 2, set to arrive next week, marking a significant update to its over-ear headphones line. This release comes after a period of anticipation, as the original AirPods Max debuted in 2020 with only minor updates since, such as new colour options in 2024 and a switch from Lightning to USB-C ports.

Key Features and Improvements

The AirPods Max 2 are powered by the H2 chip, a technology previously seen in models like the AirPods Pro 2. This chip enables up to 1.5 times more effective active noise cancellation (ANC) compared to the previous generation, promising a substantial enhancement in blocking out external sounds. Apple also claims improved sound quality, supported by a high dynamic range amplifier designed to deliver cleaner audio with better instrument separation.

Smart Features and Functionality

In addition to better ANC and sound, the AirPods Max 2 introduce several intelligent features that have been available on other Apple audio products. These include adaptive audio, which automatically adjusts noise cancellation and transparency mode based on environmental sounds, and conversation awareness, which lowers music volume and enhances voices when you start speaking.

Other notable additions are voice isolation for clearer calls by removing background noise, live translation for real-time conversations when paired with a compatible iPhone, studio-quality audio recording for podcasters, and a camera remote feature that allows users to control photo and video recording on their iPhone or iPad via the digital crown.

Pricing and Availability

The AirPods Max 2 will be priced at £499 in the UK, matching the cost of the original model. Pre-orders open on 25 March, with the headphones available in five colours: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue. Official sales are scheduled to begin in April.

Technical Specifications

Audiophiles will appreciate that the AirPods Max 2 support 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio when connected via USB-C, making them suitable for studio-quality listening and mixing. Despite these upgrades, battery life remains at 20 hours on a single charge with ANC activated.

While the design of the AirPods Max 2 is identical to the previous model, the inclusion of the H2 chip and new features brings these headphones firmly into the modern era, addressing criticisms that they had become dated. This launch positions Apple to compete more effectively in the premium wireless headphones market, offering a blend of enhanced performance and smart functionality.
