More than 30 children's toys have been recalled in the UK since the start of the year after asbestos was discovered in the products. The recalled items include sand art kits and stretchy rubber toys, which were sold by major retailers such as Tesco, Primark, Matalan and Argos.
Asbestos Found in Children's Toys
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) identified the hazardous substance in the toys, prompting the retailers to remove them from sale. The asbestos is believed to originate from sand used in Chinese mines, where natural asbestos fibers can occur and product labeling regulations are less stringent.
Consumers are urged to check the OPSS website for a full list of recalled items. Anyone who has purchased one of these toys should immediately stop using it, secure it, and return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
Consumer Groups Call for Stronger Regulation
The recalls have raised concerns about product safety standards. Consumer group Which? has called for stronger checks and better regulation to prevent dangerous products from reaching shelves. They argue that current measures are insufficient to protect children from potential health risks.
The Health and Safety Executive has also issued a reminder for the public to be asbestos aware, highlighting the dangers of exposure to the substance, which can cause serious illnesses such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Retailers have stated that they are cooperating fully with the OPSS and have removed all affected products from their stores and websites. Customers who have purchased any of the recalled toys are advised to contact the retailer directly for a full refund.
