Perth Taxi Association's future is in doubt after both its chairman and vice-chairman stepped down and several committee members left. The trade association is set to be temporarily suspended unless other cabbies come forward and take over its running.
Leadership vacuum after resignations
Outgoing vice-chairman Kevin Kulik believes "someone has to be prepared to put their head above the parapet and step up". According to insiders, no one has been willing to take on the responsibility of running the association so far.
Former chairman Sandy Smith, who runs Perth Radio Taxis, said lack of time was his reason for stepping down. He said: "We hope this is a temporary situation and look forward to a renewed interest in progressing things forward. Unfortunately, running a large taxi business doesn't allow me the time nowadays to commit to the committee."
Call for fresh faces
Outgoing vice-chairman Kevin Kulik added: "Sandy and I announced that we would both be stepping down, and other committee members have now also said they are unable to take it forward. Sadly, we've been left with little choice but to make this announcement. I still believe the trade needs a strong association, but someone has to be prepared to put their head above the parapet and step up."
Other committee members have stepped aside, citing time constraints and a need for fresh faces, as well as disappointment that no one has offered to step up to the mantle. John Patterson said: "It's time for new bodies on the committee." George Fraser added: "It's very disappointing to think that no one seems to have an interest in helping."
Outgoing committee urges new leadership
The outgoing committee is keen for a new committee to be formed and the collective voice of the trade to continue to be heard. Kevin said: "There are a lot of good operators working in the trade and we, the outgoing committee, hope someone will come forward to form a new committee and ensure the taxi trade continues to have a collective voice."
Kevin and Sandy want to thank everyone who supported the trade "during its recent challenge". A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council said: "We always try to consult widely with members of the taxi trade on matters which affect them and will continue to do so."
