Wright's Food Emporium, a cafe, deli, and wine store in Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire, is home to the Cubano sandwich that has been called the best in Wales. Located on the B4300, about 15 minutes from Pont Abraham services, the venue has never disappointed in its years of operation.
A stop-off on the way west
Opened at the start of 2014 by Simon and Maryann Wright inside a former Brains pub, the business sits in the heart of the village and is rarely not busy. The Cubano is just one reason the former Georgian pub serves as a stop-off en route to Tenby, Narberth, and beyond.
Inside, a dining space sits to the left, while to the right is a bustling deli stocked with fresh, local fruit and veg, wine, Welsh cheeses, meats, and condiments. As of this summer, a new coffee stop for walkers and cyclists, CoffiWright's, has opened around the back of the standalone building.
What's in the Cubano
The Cubano has stayed on the weekly rotating menu for years. It features ciabatta stuffed with pork belly, Hafod cheese from Lampeter, Myrddin Heritage ham from Tanerdy, pickles, Sriracha, and mayo. The chew of the bread and pork belly is offset by fresh pickles and a sharp, creamy mix of mayo and Sriracha running through each bite.
The sandwich is described as a triumph, with individual components that stand out while marrying harmoniously. The menu also includes salads featuring items from Blaencamel Farm, such as a past favourite with charred nectarines, walnuts, and Brefu Bach cheese decorated with edible flowers. Veggie sides include aubergine fritters, patatas bravas, and Welsh asparagus.
Sweet treats and nearby attractions
For those not wanting a sandwich, there are coffee and cake options. An apple and cinnamon pastry bought earlier this year was so memorable it has been awaited on Instagram ever since. The deli room still has an impressive display of sweet treats and baked goods at its heart.
Llanarthne is close to the National Botanic Gardens of Wales and the fortifications of Carreg Cennen and Dinefwr. Wright's Food Emporium is open Thursday to Sunday at Llanarthney, Carmarthen SA32 8JU.
