Woolworths Discontinues Scan&Go Mobile Feature Amid Low Uptake
Woolworths Ends Scan&Go Mobile Due to Low Uptake

Woolworths has quietly discontinued one of its popular checkout features, much to the disappointment of shoppers who had embraced the convenience. From June 8, the Scan&Go Mobile feature will vanish entirely from the Woolworths app, meaning customers will no longer be able to use their own devices to scan their groceries as they shop.

The feature allowed shoppers to save time by scanning items while moving through the aisles, without having to empty their trolleys when paying at the checkout. A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed the upcoming changes, telling the Daily Mail: 'In the coming months, the Scan&Go Mobile feature in the Woolworths app will no longer be available in Woolworths stores. While we are committed to trialling new ways to shop, we decided to transition away from this feature due to low customer uptake.'

However, shoppers who have adapted to using the Scan&Go Trolleys will still be able to utilise the digital trolley technology, which allows customers to scan groceries as they place them into the trolley. Furthermore, a Woolworths spokesperson confirmed that Scan&Go Trolleys would now be introduced at select stores that previously had the phone feature.

'In place of Scan&Go Mobile, we're introducing Scan&Go Trolleys in some locations. Customers will be able to scan groceries directly from their trolley and pack as they shop,' the spokesperson said. Only 24 out of 45 Woolworths stores across NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia that previously had the capability to shop using the mobile feature will now be getting the Scan&Go Trolleys.

Tech-savvy Woolworths shoppers took to an online discussion forum to share their disappointment over the phasing out of the Scan&Go feature on the mobile app. 'Woolworths removing app Scan&Go in all locations next month. Disappointing as I use it every week and find it a massive time saver,' one Woolies shopper shared. 'They aren't replacing with trolleys in all locations, so back to long lines for us.' Another customer wrote: 'I'm disappointed by this too, my store also isn't getting the trolleys.'

Woolworths customers were officially informed of the change via email and on the supermarket's website. 'We're making some upcoming changes to Scan&Go Mobile,' the notice said. 'In the coming months, the Scan&Go Mobile feature in the Woolworths app will no longer be available in any Woolworths stores. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.'

For the uninitiated, Scan&Go technology allows shoppers to scan grocery items as they select them in store, before placing them in their trolleys. Once their shopping is complete, customers then take their trolleys to a Scan&Go checkout to pay for their purchases. This feature was previously available to use either on your own mobile device via the Woolworths app, or by using the Scan&Go Trolleys provided by supermarkets. From June 6, it will now only be available at stores offering Scan&Go Trolleys.

Woolworths first introduced Scan&Go technology in August 2024 following an initial trial in select locations and then rolled it out to more stores the following year. But the first signs of plans to phase out the Scan&Go feature on the mobile app emerged in mid 2025, after an email confirmed the service had been discontinued in select stores.

Furthermore, in stores where the app remained enabled for use, the capability was changed so that it could no longer be used for in-app payments. A June 2026 email explained: '[T]he option to pay directly within the Scan&Go feature of the Woolworths app will no longer be supported.' The email explained customers could still enjoy the 'convenience of scanning your groceries as you shop' on their mobile, but would now need to proceed to a dedicated Scan&Go counter at the conclusion of their visit to make payment at a kiosk PIN pad.
