A Wimbledon attendee has shared her verdict on the cost of strawberries and cream at the tennis tournament, revealing the price left her pleasantly surprised. Lylaa Ali Shaikh, known as Salt and Shaikh on TikTok, sampled the iconic treat during her visit and declared it excellent value for money.
Price Revelation and Reaction
In a TikTok video, Lylaa said: "People say Wimbledon is expensive, but when the famous strawberries and cream are only £2.85, is it really? I was on a mission to find out if they are actually worth it." She added that the experience converted her into a fan of the dessert.
Lylaa highlighted the freshness of the strawberries, noting they are delivered daily from a family-run farm in Kent. She remarked: "The strawberries were very juicy and obviously very fresh. These strawberries are some of the nicest strawberries I've had."
Wimbledon Strawberries Tradition
Strawberries and cream have been a Wimbledon tradition since the Victorian era, when strawberries were a seasonal luxury available only in June and July, perfectly coinciding with the championship. According to Wimbledon officials, the tournament consumes approximately 2.5 million strawberries each year, with 140,000 servings distributed annually. This amounts to 28,000 kilograms of strawberries and 7,000 litres of cream.
Visitor Experience
During her visit, Lylaa was allowed to make her own portion. She described the process: "Firstly, we picked up our box, then we pulled off the green tops of the strawberries. Mind you, you can only have 10 strawberries per portion. Then it was time to drown them in cream." She praised the cream for coating the strawberries perfectly without overpowering them.
Concluding her review, Lylaa said: "£2.85 at Wimbledon. Genuinely one of the best value things I've eaten all summer."
