Warrington's Oldest Department Store Closes After 112 Years

Hancock and Wood, Warrington's oldest independent department store and a local staple since 1914, has announced its permanent closure, prompting an outpouring of grief from the community. The store, which has been in business for more than 112 years, will begin a closing-down sale on Friday, July 3, with up to 70% off selected items and £675,000 worth of stock to clear.

Reasons for Closure

The owners cited rising labour costs, business rates, public utility expenses, and increasing legislative burdens as key factors behind the decision. In a statement, the store said: "After 112 years, we have made the rather sad decision to close the store. As you will imagine, this is something that has not been taken lightly. However, the ever-increasing burden of employment costs, public utilities, business rates - not to mention the sheer amount of legislation that has to be navigated - has left us with little room for manoeuvre, and we now feel it is the time to bow out." The store expressed gratitude to staff, customers, and suppliers for their role in its longevity.

Community Reaction

Locals took to social media to share their disappointment. One Facebook user wrote: "Really sad about the loss of this fantastic store. We don't live in Warrington but H&W is always the first place we head for. Couldn't find a better lunch anywhere and it's always the best place for gifts, bags and ladies wear. Will be very much missed." Another commented: "The best store in town with beautiful dressed windows." A third added: "You will all be missed. No shop like you."
