Waitrose and Marks and Spencer have confirmed plans to open new stores across the UK this autumn, with six locations named so far. The new sites include a superstore in Hale Barns, Manchester, which will replace an Asda that closed in May, and a Little Waitrose convenience shop in Ascot, Berkshire.
Waitrose expands in Manchester and Ascot
Waitrose regional manager David Donovan said of the Hale Barns takeover: “Opening in Hale Barns is an exciting opportunity for Waitrose and we’ll offer the very best products and customer service for food lovers in the area.”
The supermarket will also launch a new Little Waitrose in Ascot, creating 20 new jobs. Krys Jantzen, Waitrose regional manager, said: “Securing a presence on Ascot High Street is a significant move in our convenience shop strategy. This location puts Waitrose right at the heart of a thriving community, with the branch designed to be a destination for local shoppers and a frontrunner in quality and service.”
M&S confirms three new food halls
Marks and Spencer confirmed three new sites, including a superstore in Northampton that will replace a Homebase store. The new M&S food hall will feature an in-store bakery, M&S's cheese bar and a click-and-collect service, and could create up to 70 jobs. The retailer described the store as a “modern, fit for the future” supermarket.
The stores will also include a coffee counter with barista-made hot drinks to take away, a Hot Chicken Counter, and a dedicated Flower and Wine shop “showcasing the best Flower Market Specials and award-winning wines”.
