The United Kingdom's largest ever indoor water park has closed its doors for good and is now undergoing demolition. The site, which first opened in 1993, was once the biggest water park in the country.
History of Wet 'n' Wild North Shields
Wet 'n' Wild North Shields featured a variety of slides, wave machines, and attractions, making it a popular destination for families. However, the park experienced a turbulent history, with closures and company administration plaguing its final years. It initially shut down in 2013 but reopened in 2014 following a £1.1 million investment from Moirai Capital Investments and Serco Leisure. A permanent closure was announced by Serco Leisure in 2019 after a shift to seasonal operating hours. The company had suggested a reopening in 2020, but this never materialized.
Visitor Memories
Despite its age, the park received positive reviews from visitors. One review from August 2019 stated: "It might not be the newest looking, but it's certainly one of the best water parks I've been to. The rides were ranged from calm to breathtaking. Well priced, would recommend to anyone of all ages." Another added: "It is a good water park but it needs a repaint. It is relatively cheap (ten pounds) and I was there for 3 hours. The staff are really friendly. It is busy, but it's a good thing."
Demolition Process
The site is now being demolished, with an application made by new site owners, Bloom Developments Ltd., to clear the area. The application sought permission to demolish "the building formally known as Wet 'n' Wild, including external slides." The reason given for the demolition was: "Property has recurrent breaking and entering with increasing anti-social behaviour. Demolition will enable future development."
In the decision letter approving the demolition, council officers noted: "Demolition is expected to last approximately 8 weeks and is expected to commence as soon as possible following the determination of this application."
