Typo to Close All UK Stores by Early 2027, North East Affected

Stationery retailer Typo will shut all of its UK stores and cease online trading by early 2027. The Australian brand, owned by the Cotton On Group, has already closed its Eldon Square location in Newcastle on Friday, October 9.

Phased Closures Across the Country

The closures will be phased nationwide, with no exact closing date yet confirmed for the Metrocentre store. The company currently operates approximately 13 stores in the UK, a number that has been steadily reduced through closures in previous months.

Cotton On Group released a statement explaining the decision: "After careful consideration we are closing Typo’s operations in the United Kingdom, with all stores and online trading to close by early 2027."

Reasons Behind the Decision

The statement acknowledged the impact on staff: "We recognise the impact of this decision on our Typo UK team who are already aware of this, and our priority is to support our people through this transition."

Despite success in other parts of the world, the brand said: "Despite the efforts of our teams, ongoing high rent and operating costs, combined with softer sales, mean there is no sustainable path today for Typo in the UK."

Impact on Shoppers

The Eldon Square store held a closing-down sale, but other locations closed with little or no notice. Following the closures, only Cotton On, Cotton On Body, and Cotton On Kids will continue to operate in the UK through online and wholesale channels.

By early 2027, Typo's physical stores and online shop will be gone, leaving Cotton On as the only brand from the group available to UK shoppers.
