A pub in North Tyneside that first opened in 1869 has reopened following a six-figure makeover. The Dolphin on King Edward's Road in Tynemouth underwent a significant transformation after a combined investment of £168,877 from licensee Charlie Paterson and Admiral Taverns, the UK’s leading community pub company.
Extensive refurbishment inside and out
The pub, which originally opened in the 19th century during Queen Victoria's reign, had already undergone a refurbishment in 2019. The latest transformation, carried out over the last three weeks under new management, has modernised the overall look and feel of the building while retaining its original charm and character.
Internally, the pub has been completely transformed with an extended bar area and refreshed lounge, along with new fixtures, fittings, furniture, flooring and decor throughout. Outside, The Dolphin has been revamped with brand new lighting and signage, a fresh coat of paint, and an upgraded outdoor seating area for customers to enjoy during warmer months.
Licensee's personal connection
Charlie Paterson, a Tynemouth native who took over as licensee in August 2025, brings a wealth of knowledge from various hospitality roles around the world, including luxury hotels and super yachts. He commented: "The past year at the Dolphin has been absolutely brilliant, and celebrating this milestone with a newly refurbished pub really is the icing on the cake."
He added: "This is the pub where I had my first pint with my dad, so it holds a very special place in my heart. I am so happy to be carrying on its legacy with a fresh new look, while still keeping the community at the heart of everything we do."
New menu and community focus
Paterson said the pub has revamped its food menu with new dishes and introduced a specially paired wine menu. He noted: "While there have been changes to give the pub a fresh look for this new chapter, the heart of the place remains very much the same."
He thanked the pub team, his family, Admiral Taverns, and the local community for their support, adding: "I look forward to serving them for many years to come!"
