Tesco's little-known limit could stop shoppers buying what they want
Tesco's little-known purchase limit explained

Tesco shoppers may find they cannot buy as much of a single product as they would like, due to a maximum purchase quantity policy that applies to a wide range of items. The restriction, which varies by product, currently caps many items at 16 per transaction, according to the supermarket's website.

As Britain's biggest supermarket chain, Tesco operates more than 3,000 stores nationwide. Millions of customers rely on it for their weekly grocery shop, with roughly 20 million households holding a Tesco Clubcard, yet many may be unaware of this limit.

Why the limit exists

The policy prevents shoppers from exceeding the set limit for each item during a single visit. Tesco explains: "To ensure availability of all our products customers may be limited to a maximum number of items."

The supermarket also advises customers that they can check stock levels at their nearest store before making the trip, which can be done via the Tesco Grocery and Clubcard app.

Recent app update

Earlier this year, Tesco rolled out a significant update to its app, launching a new AI-driven Meal Planner available exclusively to selected customers. The tool offers meal and recipe suggestions, generates meal plans, identifies the required ingredients and allows users to add items directly to their online basket or shopping list.

When it launched in August, Tesco explained: "It's currently being launched as a beta, which means we're making it available to selected customers first so we can learn, improve and make sure the experience is working well before making it available more widely." Customers chosen to take part in the beta trial are able to access the Meal Planner through the Tesco app.
