A taste test of supermarket own-brand sourdough loaves has crowned Tesco's Finest variety as the winner, beating rivals from Aldi, Asda and Sainsbury's. The test, conducted by a journalist, compared the four loaves against the popular Jason's brand, which typically costs between £2.15 and £2.50.
Tesco's sourdough, priced at £1.50 with a Clubcard or £2 without, was praised for its spot-on crust, rich flavour, and excellent toasting qualities. The slices were described as a great size, though the bread had more holes than Jason's. The journalist noted it is currently their go-to loaf, calling it 'basically flawless' for toast.
Sainsbury's sourdough came second, offering good value with a tangy flavour and soft texture that toasted well. However, the slices were thinly cut with notable holes. Asda's Exceptional range, the priciest at £2.44, disappointed with an underwhelming taste and dense consistency, despite good-sized slices.
Aldi's white sourdough was the least favourite, lacking chewiness and crisp crust, described as dry and not resembling sourdough. The journalist plans to try Aldi's rye variety instead. The test concluded that Tesco's sourdough is a worthy alternative to Jason's, offering superior flavour at a lower price.
