Tesco has been crowned the UK's best and favourite supermarket at The annual Grocer Gold Awards, outperforming rivals including Aldi and Morrisons. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, July 7, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, bringing together key figures from the retail sector.
Tesco Wins Grocer of the Year
The most prestigious award of the night, The Grocer of the Year, was awarded to Tesco. The judges praised the chain for delivering on multiple fronts: share, service, sustainability, and scale. Adam Leyland, editor-in-chief of The Grocer and chair of the judging panel, stated that Tesco "delivered on every front this year: share, service, sustainability and scale." The award is often considered the industry's equivalent of the Oscars.
Tesco's market share, based on sales value, has grown from 28.3% to 28.5% year-on-year, a notable achievement from an already dominant position. Last year, the title was won by German budget retailer Lidl.
Tesco Named Favourite Supermarket for 10th Consecutive Year
In addition to the top prize, Tesco was named the UK's favourite supermarket for the tenth year in a row. This recognition was attributed to its overall pricing strategy and the success of its Clubcard pricing scheme. The chain also secured the award for Own-Label Range of the Year, with the judges specifically highlighting the Fred & Flo Easy Fit Pants.
Asda Leads on Price
Among other notable winners, Asda was recognised for having the cheapest weekly shop, leading on price in 29 out of 50 weeks tracked. According to the data, Asda was found to be 2.4% cheaper than Tesco, as well as 3.7% cheaper than Sainsbury's and 5.4% cheaper than Morrisons.
Bio&Me Wins Two Awards
The gut-health food brand Bio&Me had a successful evening, winning two awards: Entrepreneur of the Year for co-founders Jon Walsh and gut-health expert Dr Megan Rossi, and SME (small or medium-sized enterprise) Brand of the Year. The company, incorporated in 2019, has quickly become a major player in the gut-health food space.
Industry Innovation Under Pressure
Adam Leyland commented on the broader significance of the awards: "This year’s The Grocer Gold Awards showcased an industry that is innovating under real pressure, with this event recognising the very best of the grocery sector. From Tesco’s scale to Bio&Me’s rapid rise, the common thread was businesses translating insight into impressive commercial results. Congratulations to all our winners."
